Automotive Body Technician

Role purpose

The Body Technician will perform routine maintenance and repairs on all fleet vehicles and shop equipment and facility as it relates primarily to paint & body work. The Technician is required to perform all other duties as required and needed to operate the maintenance department within reason to their scope of ability or as directed by the Shop Supervisor, Maintenance Manager, General Manager.  This position also requires the Body Technician to be able to do all bodywork, damage repairs and/or replacement, metal repair, fabricating, painting and estimating required on fleet vehicles.  In addition, the Body Technician is required to complete all related documents legibly and in a timely manner.  These are minimum duties for this position and may be modified by the General Manager to reflect the specific requirements of the department. The Body Technician must perform all other duties as required and needed to operate the division or as directed by the division management.


Job Requirements


  • Must be able to obtain a CDL license Class B including Passenger endorsement and air brakes. This training will be provided.
  • Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Some college or trade school a plus.
  • Must be able to pass a respiratory physical and use a powered air-purifying respirator.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to perform without constant or immediate supervision.
  • Must be able to properly prioritize, implement and manage work schedules, projects and assignments.
  • Must have experience in vehicle damage inspection and repair estimate preparation.
  • Must have experience in “body work” repair work with fiberglass, stainless and steel.
  • Must have “Journeyman” level painting experience.  
  • Must have the ability to track and control parts inventories, vendors and suppliers.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of staff in written and oral formats.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must have technical competence with light / medium duty vehicle repair and preventive maintenance.
  • Must display initiative, professionalism, candor and tact at all times.
  • Must have 6 years’ experience as a full time journey level Body Tech.
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain “Master” ASE Certification.
  • This position is considered safety sensitive


Skill To


  • Effectively use and operate the tools and equipment required for the repair and maintenance of large vehicles.


Ability To


  • Evaluate vehicle damage levels as well as related replacement parts repair and/or removal and re-install.
  • Learn and follow industrial and shop safety rules; read and interpret technical manuals and schematics; learn and effectively use personal computers and the Company’s software programs for inventory and parts; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; understand and follow oral and written instructions and work independently.


Experience / Training


  • At least 6 years of journey level verifiable training and experience in heavy duty body repair and paint.



Additional Requirements


  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug testing.
  • Have graduated high school or equivalent.
  • Have taken basic automotive or heavy duty repair courses or have good understanding of basic automotive/heavy duty systems.
  • Must have tools.
  • Must be a least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment, a valid Class “C" Commercial Driver License with Passenger Endorsements, and a medical certificate.
  • Work well with others.
  • Must be able to work five (5) consecutive days including Saturday and Sunday and/or holidays as scheduled.
  • Must be willing to work evenings.
  • Willing to learn.
  • Available for training.
  • Able to lift up to 70 lbs.


This position requires availability to work various shifts on weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays

Additional Statements

Drug and alcohol screening: Employment contingent upon passing pre-employment drug and alcohol screen. Also, contingent upon receiving a favorable background check. If applying for a safety sensitive position, it may require a physical examination.
